Route Overview

The Marangu Route is often called the "Coca-Cola Route" and is one of the most popular paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It's the only route that offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations, making it a comfortable option for many climbers.

Arrival Day

Transfer: 45 minutes

Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport and transferred to the Boma-Masai Garden at Bomang'ombe town 18.3km for overnight right from the Airport.

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Elevation: 1,860m to 2,700m | 5-6 hours

At 8:00 AM after breakfast you will get briefing from professional mountain guide for an hour then at 9:00 AM you will start a journey to the Marangu gate on the Eastern side of Kilimanjaro for registration to the National Park and begin hiking at 11:00 AM. On the way you will see different types of birds, Colobus monkeys and giant trees. The trail can be wet/raining most of the time so gaiters and trekking poles will help you. You will stop at Mandara huts at 3:00 PM for lunch, rest and some coffee or tea. Optional hike to Maundi Crater for spectacular views of Northern Tanzania and Kenya.

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Elevation: 2,700m to 3,720m | 6-7 hours

You will wake up at 7:00 AM for breakfast and pack for your next trek. 8:00 AM hike through the rainforest glades, where you can look for giant lobelias and groundsels. Continue up into open moorlands where small shrubs are main vegetation. You will stop halfway for lunch and enjoy wonderful views of Mawenzi. At 3:00 PM you will arrive at Horombo huts, where you can see Kibo's summit. Get rest, unpack and prepare for dinner. You may start feeling the effects of altitude here. You can choose to spend an extra day resting at Horombo for acclimatization.

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Elevation: 3,720m to 4,703m | 6-7 hours

Wake to breakfast as usual. If you wake up early you can get very nice photos of sunrise. The first part of the day hike through the saddle shows the connection of Mawenzi and Kibo. You may feel and notice signs of altitude sickness. There is no running water at Kibo Hut. Prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Summit Day - Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak

Elevation: 4,703m to 5,895m | 12-14 hours total

You wake at midnight and get light breakfast then prepare for your summit. The goal is to reach Uhuru Peak after sunrise. You leave at midnight and reach Gilman's Point on the crater rim at 5,681m, then continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895m - Africa's highest point. Take photos at the summit to capture this wonderful achievement. After spending time at the summit, descend back to Kibo Hut for lunch and rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for dinner and sleep.

Descent to Marangu Gate

Elevation: 3,720m to 1,860m | 5-6 hours

Wake up and pack, continuing the descent back to Mandara Hut for lunch, then continuing down to Marangu Gate where you should reach around 3:30 PM. This is the last place to meet your crew. Please don't forget to tip your porters, guides, and cook - tipping is highly appreciated in African communities. You will be picked up by tour driver and transferred back to the hotel for rest and muscle relaxation.
